Emrok Tea Factory is a proud new participant in the Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP).
The ETP approves Emrok Tea products for purchase by ETP member companies.
The ETP was established in 1997 and has grown to include 40 international member companies including several global tea brands, boutique labels and prominent tea retailers. It maintains an expert presence in all major tea regions around the world which carry out its environmental and social provisions.
"ETP is pleased to be working with the Emrok Tea Factory on the continuous improvement of the welfare and working conditions of its workers, as well as on environmental sustainability."
Robert Keter, CEO of the Emrok Tea Factory, explains why the program was so important:
“A truly great tea is not just one that tastes great, but is also one that makes you feel good about the impact you are having on the community of farmers and on the planet when you consume it.
“It is so unfortunate to observe that around the world, we see emerging economies lifting themselves out of poverty only to find that some tea producers still do not play fair. Their workers suffer poor working conditions. Some endure harassment and discrimination. On average, tea farmers around the world are still not paid fairly for their livelihoods. And many large producers continue to operate their estates in ways that cause great harm to the planet. Governments feel powerless to regulate the industry. Smallholder farms feel the effects as they bring their tea to auction, the competitive pressure to cut corners is very intense.
“Consumers are, for the most part, unaware of these issues. How can consumers make informed choices and buy teas that are produced in a reasonable way? The ETP plays a vital role here, identifying and tea producers that have consistently met their high social and environmental standards.
“Emrok Tea continues to make strong investments in its technology and people. Working in concert with organizations like the ETP helps our network of farmers and helps us showcase our talent as one of Africa's most progressive tea producers.
